Red + Near-Infrared Recovery for Athletes
It Took Me Two Years to Finally Break Sub-3 on Fran. Soreness Has Never Cost Me a Single Session.
I didn't need a new program. I needed to stop losing training days to soreness that never fully went away between sessions.
The Soreness I Wasn't Willing to Let Win
Two years ago I couldn't do a single strict pull-up. Since then I'd built up to where breaking sub-3 on Fran, 21-15-9 of thrusters and pull-ups, one of the benchmarks every CrossFitter eventually chases, felt within reach. But getting there meant training hard and staying consistent, and one thing kept standing in the way. Not my technique. Not my programming. Only recovery.
A heavy day of cleans or a WOD with a lot of kipping pull-ups would leave my shoulders and lower back wrecked for two, sometimes three days. My hamstrings weren't much better after a heavy squat or deadlift session. So I'd skip the next WOD, or scale it down to something easier than what my coach had programmed. Every skipped or scaled session felt like starting over, and for the better part of a year, that was just how it went.
— Spencer Panchik | 3x CrossFit Games AthleteMy top product from Novaalab is the Knee Ultra. This is a MUST for me to use everyday. Since I started to use the I started to use theknee ultra — my knee pain is practically non existent.
That's when it clicked for me: this wasn't a durability problem or a technique problem. It was a recovery gap. I was doing everything the programming asked of me and then leaving the other 23 hours of the day to chance.
One hour of training doesn't matter if I ignore the other twenty-three. Recovery was the part of the plan I never actually had.
What Changed Between WODs
I'd already tried the standard stack. Ice baths after the hardest sessions, foam rolling most nights, a few sauna sessions a week, a Theragun on my traps and quads. They all felt good in the moment. None of them actually reduced how sore I was two days later. They were moving fluid around and numbing things temporarily, not repairing the tissue that heavy training breaks down.
A teammate at my box mentioned he'd started using a red light pad after every session, not just when something was bothering him.
He said it was the first recovery tool that actually made a difference two days later, not just twenty minutes later.
I looked into it. The Novaa LightPad uses red and near-infrared light to work at the cellular level, where the actual repair happens, not just on the surface where ice and rollers work.
Dual Wavelength
660nm red and 850nm near-infrared light for cellular repair.
Reaches 2 inches deep
Hands-Free Coverage
Straps on, covers shoulders, back, hamstrings and more
Set it and forget it
Built to Travel
Fits in a gym bag for the box, home, or on the road
Portable, cordless-length
None of it would have mattered if it hadn't actually changed how I felt two days after a heavy session.
- Reduces the inflammation that builds up after a hard WOD
- Supports blood flow to muscle tissue while it repairs
- Fits into a normal post-session routine, at the box or at home
So I started using it after every session, not just the brutal ones. Here's what happened over the next few months.
The Day I Finally Broke Sub-3
The first couple of weeks, I didn't notice much. But by week three or four, I realized I hadn't scaled a WOD in a while. Sessions that used to wreck me for days were leaving me sore for maybe a few hours.
No skipped sessions. Just progress. The soreness that used to set me back was barely there anymore.
Five months after I started, I finally did it: 21-15-9 of thrusters and pull-ups, unbroken pace, 2:54. Not because I trained harder. Because I stopped losing sessions to soreness that used to take two or three days to clear on its own.
— Julie V. | USCustomer service is top notch. I’m an athlete and red light daily for my knees and hips has had a big impact on reducing my stiffness and accelerating recovery.
— Yelena G. | USThe device is easy to use, well-made, and convenient to apply to different areas. For an active athlete, this has been a really helpful addition to his recovery routine. Highly recommend for anyone dealing with muscle fatigue or soreness!
— Mark C. | USUsing a red light device was recommended to me in order to get back on my feet as anathlete. I’ve noticed positive results, and will be incorporating Novaa’s heating pad into my overall recovery routine.
Five months in, here’s what the before and after actually looks like for me:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Sore for 2-3 days after heavy WOD | Back to normal training the next day |
| Skipped or scaled down the next WOD | Trained at full intensity, session after session |
| Ice, rolling, sauna, Theragun | One 15-20 minute routine after every session |
| PR attempt kept getting pushed back | Broke sub-3 on Fran |
| Never sure if recovery was actually working | Consistent routine I could actually track |
What I was sceptical about
“Is this just another recovery gadget I'll stop using in a month?”
Fair question. That was my biggest worry, honestly. But it straps on and runs itself while I'm already stretching or packing up my bag, so it's not a separate thing I have to remember to do.
“Does this actually beat what I'm already doing, ice, foam rolling, my Theragun?”
Those tools work on the surface. They move fluid around or numb the nerves for a bit. Red and near-infrared light reaches about 2 inches deep and works at the cellular level, giving muscle tissue the energy it needs to actually repair, not just feel better for twenty minutes.
“I'm not injured, just sore. Isn't this overkill?”
I thought that too. But at the training volume it takes to chase a PR like sub-3 Fran, recovery capacity is what actually limits you, not just avoiding injury. This isn't a treatment for something broken. It's what let me train at full intensity more consistently.

Why athletes trust the LightPad
Try it for 60 days. If your recovery doesn't improve, send it back.
Why Red Light Reaches What Ice and Rollers Can't
Heavy training, cleans, kipping pull-ups, a hard WOD, depletes cellular energy and creates micro-tears in muscle tissue. That's the actual soreness. Ice and foam rolling work on the surface: they reduce swelling and numb the area for a while. They don't give your cells what they need to repair faster.
Recovery starts at the cell, not the surface. Ice and rollers never reached what was actually damaged.
Think of your muscles like a battery that heavy training drains faster than it can recharge on its own. Red and near-infrared light doesn't numb anything or move fluid around. It feeds the battery directly, giving your cells the energy (ATP) they need to repair themselves faster.
Red and near-infrared light, penetrating roughly 2 inches deep, past where ice and rollers reach.
The same wavelengths used in the LightPad were shown to speed up muscle tissue repair in clinical research.
Leading to faster recovery while reducing the risk of fatigue-related injuries.
Most people use it for 15-20 minutes right after training, on whatever's sorest: shoulders, lower back, hamstrings. Most start noticing a real difference within the first two to three weeks of consistent use, not the first session.
Recover Like You Train
The same routine that got me to sub-3 on Fran: 15 to 20 minutes after every session, whatever's sorest that day.
- Speeds up recovery by reducing post-WOD inflammation
- Enhances blood flow for faster muscle repair
- Portable, use it at home, the box, or on travel
- Helps prevent re-injury and chronic soreness
