Does Red Light Therapy Help With Scars?

Many of us reading this will know someone who has been affected by scarring. Whether it be from surgery or some other kind of incident, it can certainly be detrimental, especially when you take the psychological side of things into account. It may not seem like a big deal, but dealing with a scar (or multiple) is hardly going to bring positive energy into your life.

With that being said, we here at NovaaLab want to try and find a solution to the problem. We can’t promise an overnight fix, but what we can do is discuss something that has slowly but surely been making an impact across the medical world: red light therapy. Yes, this may seem like a taboo subject to some, but the evidence of its effectiveness is growing with each and every passing year.

Today, our aim is to run through a few of the ways in which RLT has been known to positively impact scarring. Some of the solutions may seem too good to be true, but trust us when we say that this can be the beginning of an entirely new journey for you.

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy doesn’t exactly make the world go around, but at the heart of it, this is a treatment that is used to help deal with any pains or ailments in your body. It can be used in the comfort of your own home, you can take assistance from a professional, or you can do as much research as you so desire before purchasing. There’s no rush.

There are bound to be negative connotations attached to this idea, and we can understand why. After all, the premise of exposing your skin to a laser, lamp, or heat-based device can seem scary. Alas, it’s called low-level laser therapy for a reason, with this being an entirely safe-to-use method that uses wavelengths that are transmitted to parts of the body that need to be fixed.

From deep tissue problems to visible concerns and beyond, red light therapy is about as diverse as it gets. It’s also developing at a pretty rapid rate across the globe, giving cause for optimism when it comes to just how widespread it could get in terms of what injuries it could help with.

Buckle up folks, because this is just the beginning.

How red light therapy helps with scars

We’ve decided to divide and conquer when it comes to some of the headline reasons why red light therapy is such a beneficial tool for scars. On the face of it, some may wonder or question why it’s so highly thought of above other techniques - and again, we completely understand that. This is all about providing clarity and peace of mind for those who are feeling somewhat trepiduous.

Scarring can stick with you for years, and we aren’t here to suggest that a magic cure is right around the corner. Alas, what we are here to do is give you a choice, and a pretty solid one at that.

Improving circulation

The need to improve circulation in your body is critical to your overall health, and if you’ve got poor vascular flow, it can disrupt the healing process of skin that happens to be damaged. Thankfully, red light therapy can help accelerate the production of endothelial cells, which can be vital to getting your blood pumping in a necessary manner.

As per a report published back in 2017, exposure to a specific form of red light can increase vessel diameter, also known as vasodilation. This helps to promote good circulation and, from there, can make a big difference with regard to your scars. Again, it isn’t going to be noticeable in the blink of an eye, but it’s exactly the kind of starting point you need.

Reducing inflammation

Inflammation isn’t something you can always see, but it’s definitely something you can feel, and it can really set you back on your road to recovery regardless of the injury. For scars, though, it’s worth noting that damaged tissue is at the forefront of the issue (rhyming not intended), which is where red light therapy comes into the equation.

A previous study indicated that RLT activates cellular energy generation and, subsequently, relieves inflammation. It can help to regenerate the tissue that has been damaged and can begin a healing process with minimal scarring, with the appearance being dramatically improved. From pillar to post, we see this as an absolute win.

Producing elastin

For those who don’t know, elastin is a protein in our body that is naturally produced and can provide added strength and stretchiness to both your organs and your tissues. Unfortunately, scars are, by definition, quite inflexible, with there being a distinct lack of elastin proteins. So, being able to boost this in some way, shape, or form can be a complete game-changer.

A report in 2019 found that red light therapy does just that, boosting elastin production to really help reduce the impact of your scars. It used a combination of red light and NIR light to look at all layers of the skin, with the emerging cells breaking through to help out with any and all scars. Once again, this is the kind of treatment that can change lives.

Activating stem cells

Stem cells serve as the body’s raw materials, and in many ways, they are individual superheroes. They can develop into many different types of cells, from muscle to brain and beyond, and because of that, when they become inactive, more and more concerns can arise in your body that need to be dealt with as quickly as possible.

A previous study has suggested that low-level light therapy can activate stem cells in a way that increases tissue repair and, by default, can lead to the increased healing of scars. The results are going to be there for all to see, and if you’ve read this far, you’ve probably gathered that RLT can attack this on so many fronts that your scars won’t even see it coming.

Healing wounds

It can be really difficult for wounds to heal, and the amount of time that it takes can vary dramatically depending on the extent of the injury. Whether it be from a scar sustained in surgery, a general injury, or one you’ve been with for as long as you can remember, red light therapy for scar tissue can be as effective as anything in medicine.

A review has previously examined controlled trials that take a closer look at red light and how it can help to heal wounds. The researchers came to the conclusion that RLT significantly increases wound contraction and tensile strength with faster, smoother healing results from head to toe.

How long until you see results from red light therapy for scars?

Patience is a difficult thing to obtain at the best of times, and when you’re feeling particularly anxious about your health, both physical and mental, then it can get quite draining to sit around and wait. While we can understand how frustrating this would be, the question of “how long” cannot be answered quite so easily.

It really does depend on how long you’ve had the scar that you’re dealing with. If a scar is older, then it’s going to be more difficult to treat, and that also extends to how big it is and how deep into your skin it goes.

A general timescale would be a couple of months, but it’s well worth it, and we’re pretty confident in saying you’ll be left with a smile on your face when it’s all said and done.
