Does Red Light Help With Hyperpigmentation?

Created on:

When dealing with the skin, there are endless risks and concerns out there for us all to deal with in everyday life. From sun exposure to visual ailments and beyond, it can become a real hassle to deal with. Regarding what we’ll be discussing today, hyperpigmentation is an issue that many have to deal with daily - and we want to try to raise some awareness of that.

Red light therapy is something that has been on a steady incline for quite some time now in the world of photomedicine. It may seem scary to consider exposing your skin to a kind of laser or light-based device, but the evidence of RLT’s success is growing year by year.

Hopefully, we can shed some light (pun not intended) on how it can make a positive impact with hyperpigmentation.

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is when patches of skin gradually become darker than the areas surrounding it, which can be caused by things such as freckles, melasma, moles, and more. It can also stem from a more general injury or infection that you’ve sustained, which has gone untreated and has, therefore, led to the aforementioned problems.

The spots can sometimes be referred to as sun spots, liver spots, or age spots when they are left in one specific area, and they can be triggered by an increase in melanin. It can also come as we grow older or if we’re exposed to the sun quite frequently.

In terms of safety, there’s no immediate danger that comes with hyperpigmentation - but cosmetically speaking, it isn’t something that everyone wants to deal with. In fact, it can give many some real concerns about their mental health as they fret over their appearance.

But never fear, because there are solutions out there.

How hyperpigmentation can be treated

In a broader sense, there are ways to prevent hyperpigmentation before it even happens - such as taking vitamin supplements, cutting down on your alcohol intake, and wearing plenty of sunscreen. Of course, there’s never going to be a perfect solution, which is why there are active treatments used to help you fix up and look sharp.

The key here is to be cautious because there’s always a chance you could wind up with hypopigmentation, aka white spots that can’t be fixed. Depending on your skin tone, chemical peels, microdermabrasion therapy, and pigment inhibitors are all part of the more overarching process of treating hyperpigmentation.

However, with red light therapy, the healing properties are often second to none - which is where we’re going to continue our journey.

Benefits of red light therapy for hyperpigmentation

Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the primary types of hyperpigmentation, and it often comes from the physical reactions of those who have skin conditions such as eczema and acne. Inflammation often does its most effective work beneath the surface, but the good news is that red light therapy has a proven track record of dealing with it in a concise manner.

A previous study has suggested that red light therapy activates cellular energy and, off the back of that, can relieve inflammation. That can have a ripple effect that prevents any long-term issues, but for hyperpigmentation, it helps to alleviate some of the strain coming from one of the biggest contributors to this condition.

Rejuvenating skin cells

When our skin cells get injured or are deemed to be unhealthy, our body can sometimes start to panic. As a result, there can be an overproduction of melanin, which is done to protect the cells. What’s even better than that, though, is actively rejuvenating your skin cells - and red light therapy is the way to do it.

You can allow your skin cells to heal and rejuvenate with healthy wavelength levels. A past study indicated that there was significant progress made when it came to stimulating, healing, and restoring these skin cells in a way that makes them feel as good as new. If that isn’t a step in the right direction, then we don’t know what is.

Tyrosinase

As we’ve spoken about already, an excessive production of melanin is a pretty common cause of hyperpigmentation. Melanin is a pigment that gives skin its color, leading to patches or spots that can come in a range of different colors. With red light therapy, there are certain nuisances that allow it to negate this impact and turn it completely on its head.

A previous study demonstrated that wavelengths in the near-infrared spectrum can inhibit the production of tyrosinase. This, in turn, decreased melanin synthesis.

It’s a solid breakthrough that helps prove why red light therapy can be such an important piece of the puzzle when dealing with hyperpigmentation.

Rachel B. - 5 stars (Novaa Glow Therapy Mask)

"I love this LED light mask. Since going through the Menopause my skin has been prone to breakouts and spots. This LED mask has helped balance my skin when using daily. I've had the mask just under a week and seen improvement already.  Its easy to use and adjust. I personally prefer the red for it's anti ageing benefits and collagen boosting. The green is good for the declogeege and neck area as evens out my hyperpigmentation & breakouts. Very happy with this purchase and the price is good for the benefits it gives you."
